A Simple Explanation of the Importance of the Vibration Analysis

Personally, I find vibration one of the most interesting phenomenons in the universe. It can be defined as a repetitive motion around an equilibrium point. It is one of the most important subjects that must be considered in engineering applications. Otherwise, you may face some undesirable outputs because of the excessive vibrations. Every objects in the universe vibrate. It is the nature of the objects and in engineering, we have to understand this motion to control/manipulate the system of interest. So, here, I will briefly explain the importance of vibration analysis without using any mathematical expression. The simplest model of a vibrating system can be modeled as a mass-spring model. Image that you have a spring that is fixed to a ground and you have a mass at the other tip of the spring (Figure 1a). Instinctively, you know that the mass will vibrate when any disturbance is applied to it. In theory, this vibration lasts forever but we know that it never happens like that because of the hysteric damping in the spring material, the friction, air resistance etc. Therefore, in real cases, there is always a damper/damping accompanying to the spring, even if the level of the damping … Continue reading A Simple Explanation of the Importance of the Vibration Analysis
